Moving Journey — Step by step

Setting up your legal and financial foundation is the first priority when moving to Marbella. This covers your NIE number, Spanish bank account, and residency registration.

Building a solid legal and financial foundation is the single most important step in your move. Doing things in the right order will save you months of administrative heartache.

1. The NIE Number (Your Spanish Tax ID)

A NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the key to everything in Spain. You cannot buy a car, sign a rental contract longer than 11 months, get home insurance, or install fiber internet without it.

There are three ways to get it:

- In your home country: via the Spanish consulate. This is often the least stressful way.

- On-site in Spain: at the National Police (requires a 'Cita Previa' which can be very difficult to obtain yourself).

- Via Power of Attorney: You give a lawyer in Marbella the power to apply and pick it up for you. This is the gold standard for those who want it to just work.

2. Choosing the Right Bank

While you can use Revolut or Wise for daily purchases, a Spanish IBAN is required for direct debits (Recibos). Companies like Endesa (electricity) and local town halls often refuse foreign accounts for automatic payments.

Banking tips:

- Sabadell, Caixa, and BBVA: These have the most developed expat departments with English-speaking staff and good apps.

- Resident vs. non-resident account: If you open an account before moving, you get a 'non-resident' account. Remember to switch to a resident account once you have your residency to lower annual fees.

3. Residency (The Green Card)

If you stay here for more than 183 days in a calendar year, you automatically become tax resident in Spain. This means you are taxed here on your global income and assets.

to book a so-called 'Relocation Bundle'. It ensures your papers are correct from day one and saves you weeks of time in queues. If you are also in the process of a property transaction, ensure your property lawyer or rental requirements are aligned with these administrative steps.

Advisor Insight

"Apply for your NIE as soon as you think about moving. In high season, getting an appointment in Marbella or Estepona can take 6-8 weeks, which can delay property closings or school registrations."
