Legal, Banking & NIE
How do I get my NIE and open a Spanish bank account? Setting up your legal and financial foundation is the first priority when moving to Marbella.
Navigating Spanish bureaucracy is the single most common hurdle for new arrivals. started before you even pack your first suitcase.
The NIE Number
The NIE (*Número de Identidad de Extranjero*) is your tax ID and the key to everything. You cannot sign a rental contract, install fiber internet, or buy a car without it. You can apply via a Spanish consulate in your home country or through a lawyer with power of attorney in Marbella.
Choosing a Bank
A Spanish IBAN is mandatory for utility 'recibos' (direct debits). While Neobanks like Revolut are great for daily spending, local companies like Endesa often reject non-Spanish accounts for automatic payments. We recommend Sabadell or Caixa for their excellent expat departments. Learn more about the Admin foundation for your move.
